Pramila Jayapal – 2016 Progressives to Elect

Pramila Jayapal – WA State Senator Washington –

WA CD-07

STRENGTHENING HEALTH CARE IN AMERICA

While the Affordable Care Act has made great improvements to access to health , many are still not covered or are underinsured. Pramila will support efforts to streamline our health care system by reducing the overhead and administrative costs that hinder innovation in the health care space. She supports a “single-payer” model that creates comprehensive coverage for all Americans, from preventive care to long-term care, prescription medications, and mental health services. This model will ensure fair prices from drug companies and make strategic health care investments in communities across this country based on accountability and outcomes, not profits.

STOPPING VIOLENCE AGAINST COMMUNITIES OF COLOR

Pramila has worked to reform the policing system in Seattle—serving on police accountability panels and helping lead the coalition that brought the US Department of Justice in to Seattle to investigate the Seattle Police Department for biased policing. She’ll continue to fight to demilitarize our police forces, provide strong oversight on use of force, train officers on de-escalation, and address the culture of racism that permeates too many of our institutions, including our police force.

BREAKING THE SCHOOL-TO-PRISON PIPELINE

Private prisons are feeding off the failures of our communities and determining where they will build based on the third-grade scores of children in the area. Rather than putting Federal dollars in imprisonment, we must invest in eliminating the opportunity gap for kids of color in our schools. This starts with banning suspension below the 6th grade and instead investing in restorative justice and alternative efforts that have been proven to keep kids in school and out of prison.

RESTORING VOTING RIGHTS

Pramila has been a strong champion of voting rights, introducing a bill for Automatic Voter Registration and working as the lead champion in the Senate to pass the Washington Voting Rights Act. In Congress, she will fight to restore and expand the Federal Voting Rights Act, re-enfranchise the more than two million ex-felons who are African-Americans and paid their debt to society, and stop the systematic efforts to disenfranchise minority voters by requiring IDs or gerrymandering voting lines.

ENSURING ECONOMIC JUSTICE

Pramila will fight for raising the federal minimum wage so that the disproportionate number of workers of color in low-wage jobs can be paid fairly for their work. She will also work to stop the tremendous concentrations of wealth that prevent minorities from owning homes, saving for retirement or getting health insurance.

COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE

Pramila will stand up to the climate change deniers in Congress and fight for immediate action on climate change — pushing to reduce carbon emissions in the U.S. and around the world. Pramila understands the dire consequences any further delay will have on our environment, public health, and local fishing and tourism industries.

PROMOTING A CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY

In Congress, Pramila will push for a clean energy economy that invests in alternative energies and put an end to toxic fracking and deep water drilling that threatens our environment. She will support research and development of next-generation technologies that curb greenhouse gas emissions and improve our health.

ENACTING JUST AND HUMANE COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM

Our immigration policies should reflect our values of family, human dignity and work. In Congress, Pramila will work to establish a federal Office for Immigrant Integration, as well as to pass just and humane immigration reform that provides legalization and a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants, reunites families, protects immigrant workers on the job, and fully embraces the contributions that immigrants make to our society.

ENSURING AMERICA CONTINUES TO WELCOME REFUGEES

America has always been a country that has welcomed refugees from around the world who are escaping economic, political and social turmoil. Pramila believes this is a critically important role for America to play in a world of global migration where more than 1 billion people are on the move. In Congress, she will work to ensure we continue to accept refugees in numbers that reflect America’s global status in the world and history of compassion, and that we provide them with the support and services needed once here.

INVESTING IN EDUCATION

Pramila knows that early education provides a strong start . She was named a Children’s Alliance Champion in the State Senate for her efforts to pass the Early Start Act that put an additional $158 million into early childhood education and she’ll continue to be a strong advocate for early childhood education in Congress.

FIGHTING FOR HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL

In the State Senate Pramila pushed for reforms that take into account the individual student rather than just aggregate data points. She also helped create a model policy for language translation and interpretation for Limited English Proficient parents and fought for additional support for teachers of bilingual and special needs kids.

ENDING COLLEGE DEBT

Pramila will advocate for closing the higher education gap for low-income students and children of color. She believes that no student – regardless of background or income level, who is willing and able 2016 Progressives to Elect to go to college – should be denied because they can’t afford the cost. That’s why she supports making all public universities and colleges tuition free. For students who already have outstanding Federal student loans, Pramila will fight to ensure borrowers have the ability to modify their interest rates and terms to avoid being saddled with burdensome debt.
